Weekly Market Update: October 5, 2026
Week Ending October 2, 2026
S&P 500: -0.27%
NASDAQ Composite: +0.45%
Dow Jones Industrial Average: -1.26%
Weekly index price changes compare the October 2 close with the September 25 close and exclude dividends. Research cutoff: October 4, 2026, at 11:59 PM America/Phoenix.
Market Takeaway
U.S. equity markets finished the week mixed. The NASDAQ Composite advanced, while the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average declined. Different benchmark results provided different views of the same week.
Reports on employment, consumer spending, inflation, and manufacturing added economic context. NIKE’s quarterly results offered a separate company-level perspective. These developments do not isolate the causes of the weekly index changes.
Thematic Drivers of the Week
1. Employment reports showed different parts of the labor market
What happened: September payrolls increased by an estimated 29,000, while the unemployment rate was 4.2%. Initial unemployment claims in the latest weekly report edged lower.
Why it mattered: Payrolls measure jobs, the unemployment rate measures people seeking work, and claims track new benefit filings. They are related but distinct measures.
Market context: These estimates provided labor-market context without establishing why individual stock indexes moved differently.
2. Spending and prices both increased
What happened: August consumer spending increased in dollar terms and after adjusting for inflation. The PCE price index also rose.
Why it mattered: Comparing nominal spending with inflation-adjusted spending helps distinguish changes in prices from changes in consumption.
Market context: One month’s spending and inflation readings do not establish a lasting trend or determine the Federal Reserve’s next decision.
3. Manufacturing remained in expansion territory
What happened: ISM’s September Manufacturing PMI was 54.5, compared with 54.6 in August. Its prices index increased.
Why it mattered: A manufacturing PMI above 50 generally indicates expansion. The prices index describes the breadth of reported input-price changes, not the percentage increase in costs.
Market context: The survey offers another view of business conditions. It is not a measure of the whole economy or proof of the cause of weekly market movements.
Earnings Recap: Key Companies in Focus
NIKE Inc. (NKE) - Reported October 1
Fiscal first quarter ended August 31, 2026. Comparisons are with the three months ended August 31, 2025. Financial statements are unaudited.
Results:
Revenue: $11.213 billion, compared with $11.720 billion, down 4% as reported.
Gross margin: 42.8%, compared with 42.2%.
GAAP net income: $712 million, compared with $727 million.
GAAP diluted earnings per share: $0.48, compared with $0.49.
Takeaway: Revenue declined while gross margin improved. NIKE attributed the margin improvement primarily to lower warehousing and logistics costs. One company’s results do not represent all consumer spending or indicate its stock’s future performance. Forward-looking company targets are not included in these realized results.
Major Economic Reports Recap
GDP Third Estimate - Released September 30
Real second-quarter GDP grew at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 2.2%, revised from the previous estimate of 1.5%. This release also incorporated an annual update to earlier data.
Economic Takeaway: The revision changes the estimate of past activity. An annualized quarterly rate is not full-year growth or a forecast.
Personal Income and Outlays - Released September 30
August nominal personal consumption expenditures, or PCE, increased 0.9% from July; real PCE rose 0.6%. The PCE price index rose 0.3% for the month and 3.4% from a year earlier. Excluding food and energy, prices rose 0.2% monthly and 3.0% annually. These estimates are subject to revision.
Economic Takeaway: Spending increased after accounting for prices, but aggregate growth does not describe every household’s experience.
ISM Manufacturing PMI - Released October 1
September’s PMI of 54.5 remained above 50. The prices index rose to 77.9 from 71.1 in August. These are survey diffusion indexes, not percentage growth rates for output or prices.
Economic Takeaway: Survey respondents reported continued expansion alongside more widespread input-price increases.
Weekly Unemployment Claims - Released October 1
Seasonally adjusted initial claims were 197,000 for the week ending September 26, down 1,000 from the revised prior-week level of 198,000. The four-week average was 200,000. These are advance estimates.
Economic Takeaway: Claims offer timely information about benefit filings, but do not measure all hiring or joblessness.
Employment Situation - Released October 2
September’s estimated payroll gain was 29,000. July and August changes were revised down by a combined 60,000; August’s gain is now 133,000. The unemployment rate was 4.2%. The Bureau of Labor Statistics characterized payroll employment and unemployment as little changed. Payroll estimates remain preliminary.
Economic Takeaway: Revisions and survey uncertainty matter when interpreting a single month.
Technical Perspective
The Cboe Volatility Index, or VIX, closed at 15.31 on October 2, below its October 1 close of 16.39, according to FRED.
Interpretation: The VIX reflects options-implied expectations of near-term S&P 500 volatility. Its decline over those sessions does not predict market direction or guarantee calm conditions.
Key Takeaways for Investors
The NASDAQ gained for the week, while the S&P 500 and Dow declined.
Employment reports measured different aspects of the labor market and included revisions.
Consumer spending increased in both nominal and inflation-adjusted terms.
Manufacturing survey expansion coincided with more widespread input-price increases.
NIKE reported lower revenue and improved gross margin; the VIX eased between Thursday and Friday.
Looking Ahead

Economic Data to Watch
October 9: The University of Michigan is scheduled to release preliminary October consumer sentiment at 10:00 AM ET. The survey measures attitudes and expectations rather than realized spending or inflation.
Fed Events to Watch
October 7: Minutes of the September 15–16 FOMC meeting are scheduled for 2:00 PM ET. Minutes describe an earlier policy discussion and are not a new rate decision.
October 8: Governor Christopher Waller is scheduled to speak on the economic outlook at 4:30 AM ET. Individual officials’ remarks are not Committee policy decisions.
Closing Thought
Last week’s reports offered different perspectives on employment, spending, and business conditions. The major indexes also posted different results. A single headline captures only part of that picture.
Weekly developments provide context for understanding markets. Their significance can vary with a household’s goals, time horizon, and cash-flow needs.
